Cian Murphy is an Irish search engine optimisation (SEO) consultant, digital marketing specialist and entrepreneur. He is the founder of Cian Murphy Digital, a boutique digital marketing agency, and the managing director of Ardú Digital, a digital marketing agency based in Cork, Ireland.[1][2]

Raised on a dairy farm in Dunmore East, County Waterford, Murphy studied creative media in Wales before entering the SEO industry in 2006.[5] With more than two decades in digital marketing, he is known for his work in technical and local SEO, paid media, online reputation management and, more recently, optimisation for AI- and large language model (LLM)-driven search.[1][2] He is a frequent commentator on digital marketing in the Irish media, having featured in the Irish Independent and on RTÉ Radio 1.[3][4]

Murphy grew up on a dairy farm near Dunmore East, a fishing village in County Waterford, Ireland.[5] He later moved to Wales to study creative media, where he developed an interest in web design that would shape his career.

He graduated with a media studies degree in 2007 and subsequently completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in tourism management, with a specialisation in marketing, at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.[5] Murphy has said that his first hands-on experience of SEO came in 2006, when he was tasked with getting a website to appear in Google.[2]

Career [edit]

Entry into digital marketing and SEO

Murphy began his working life in 2005 in a call centre, selling advertising space on a local buy-and-sell website.[1] He has recalled that a large share of prospects declined on the grounds that they were "advertising on Google now," a pattern that convinced him search-engine marketing would keep growing and prompted him to educate himself in digital marketing.[1] Believing in "learning by doing," he taught himself Google AdWords by experimenting with the platform until he understood it in detail.[1]

E-commerce, agency and in-house years

Murphy has spoken on SEO and content marketing at industry events, including MozCon and Network Ireland.

After leaving the call centre, Murphy joined an e-commerce company, where he developed a digital marketing strategy spanning SEO, pay-per-click advertising, social media and affiliate marketing.[1] Over the following years he worked in-house, in agencies and on a freelance basis, with roles reported to include positions at Digitalbootcamp.ie and Arcadia Digital.[5] He has also worked for International Living, described as one of the largest independent publishing companies in the United States.[1]

Murphy has attended and spoken at a number of industry events, including the Moz search-marketing conference MozCon in 2013 and 2018, and has given talks and guest lectures on SEO and content marketing in Ireland and the United States.[1]

Cian Murphy Digital

Murphy founded Cian Murphy Digital, a boutique digital marketing agency with a primary focus on SEO, operating through his personal website cianmurphy.ie.[1] The practice offers SEO consultancy and training, Google Ads management, paid social, online reputation management, content marketing and website design, working chiefly with start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises.[1]

Ardú Digital

Murphy is the managing director of Ardú Digital, a digital marketing agency based in Cork.[2] Having specialised in web design during his media studies and then moved into e-commerce, he now concentrates on search marketing, and at Ardú is responsible for strategy, client communications and onboarding.[2]

Views and methodology [edit]

Murphy describes adaptability and early adoption as central to his approach, arguing that marketers must "constantly train and up-skill" to avoid being left behind by rapid changes in technology.[1] He has been an advocate of what he terms "search everywhere optimisation" — extending SEO practice to encompass AI-generated answers and LLM-driven search alongside conventional rankings — and writes on emerging topics such as fan-out queries and the effect of AI-generated content on search.[1]

He places particular emphasis on measurable return on investment, local SEO for small businesses, and online reputation management, arguing that individuals and organisations should actively manage their own digital footprint rather than leave it to others.[3][4]

Public image and media [edit]

Murphy is an active commentator on digital marketing in Ireland. He featured in the Irish Independent in a piece on managing one's online reputation, framed around the idea that if a person does not control their digital footprint, someone else will.[3] He has also appeared on RTÉ Radio 1's The Ray D'Arcy Show, discussing SEO and online reputation.[4] He publishes on his agency blog, hosts the podcast Cian on AI & Digital, and maintains an active presence on LinkedIn, YouTube and other platforms.[1]

Personal life [edit]

Originally from County Waterford, Murphy is based in the south of Ireland.[5] He has spoken about a passion for digital marketing that goes beyond his career, and about a commitment to helping small businesses regardless of budget.[1]
